Terms of Service

Effective October 5, 2026

1. About these terms

1.1 Allele is operated by pedigree.dev LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company doing business as Allele Genomics ("we", "us", "our"). These terms govern your use of Allele at allele.dev and in our mobile apps (the "Service").

1.2 By creating an account, accepting these terms in the Service, or using the Service, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1.3 Some parts of the Service ask for a separate answer, such as your consent to name your animals in other farms' parentage reports. Those answers form part of these terms.

2. Accounts and farms

2.1 Allele is organised around farms. When you create or join a farm, you accept these terms for yourself and for that farm, and you confirm that you have authority to do so. "You" means you and the farm.

2.2 A farm's owner is responsible for everything done by the members they admit, as if it were done by the owner. Keep your login details to yourself, and tell us promptly at support@allele.dev if you think someone else has used them.

2.3 You must be 18 or older. A person aged 13 to 17 may use the Service only if a parent or guardian accepts these terms and is responsible for their use.

3. The Service

3.1 Allele lets you record your animals and their performance, order DNA tests, check parentage, estimate breed composition, inbreeding and relationships, receive genetic evaluations (EBVs) and growth projections, and use Farmhand, our typed and spoken assistant.

3.2 Breed societies make their own decisions. Whether a breed society accepts an Allele result, for registration or for any other purpose, is for that society to decide under its own rules. We are not responsible for a society's decision.

3.3 We change, add and retire features over time. Features labelled experimental, preview or beta are offered as they are (section 10.6), and may change or end without notice.

4. Your data

4.1 Your data stays yours. You keep whatever rights you have in the records, genotypes, photos and other material that you, your farm members or your laboratory put into Allele ("Your Data"). You are free to use Your Data anywhere else.

4.2 What you allow us to do with it. You grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual and irrevocable licence to store, copy, analyse, combine and process Your Data, and to create results from it, in order to:

  • (a) provide the Service to you;
  • (b) provide the Service to other users. Parentage checks, breed classification, genomic relationships, genetic evaluations and population statistics work by comparing animals across flocks, and cannot be done without this. For example, your ram may be a candidate sire in another farm's parentage check, your genotypes may help classify another farm's animals, and your records help estimate every flock's EBVs;
  • (c) maintain each species' reference panels, allele frequencies, genetic base and growth models;
  • (d) test, check and improve our methods and software, including Farmhand;
  • (e) carry out our own research, including novel genetic research, and develop new tests, analyses and products from it;
  • (f) publish or share statistics and research findings that do not identify you, your farm or your animals; and
  • (g) comply with the law and protect the Service and its users.

4.3 This licence covers Your Data whenever it was submitted, including before these terms were published. It continues after you stop using the Service; section 7 explains why.

4.4 What we will not do. We will not sell Your Data. We will not give Your Data, or records derived from it, to anyone else, even with names removed, unless you consent: for example, by connecting another service to your farm, or by giving research consent (section 4.5). This does not limit what other users see under sections 5 and 6, our service providers (section 4.6), a successor to our business that takes on these terms, or a disclosure the law requires. Statistics and research findings that do not identify you, your farm or your animals may be shared under section 4.2(f).

4.5 Research with others. Researchers outside Allele, such as universities and breed improvement programs, may use your records only with your research consent. We may ask for it for a particular study, or you may give it for research in general. We share only the records a study needs, and only with researchers who agree to use them for that study, keep them confidential, and not try to identify you, your farm or your animals. You can withdraw research consent for future studies at any time. Records already shared for a study may still be used for that study.

4.6 Our service providers. Laboratories, hosting, payment, email, speech-recognition and language-model providers process Your Data on our behalf and only to provide the Service. Our Privacy Policy describes them. A researcher is never treated as a service provider.

4.7 Your promise to us. You promise that you have the right to put Your Data into Allele and to grant this licence, including for data you obtained from a breeder, a breed society, a laboratory, another software program or an earlier owner of an animal.

4.8 Checking records. We check records before using them. We may flag, question, quarantine or leave out of an analysis any record that looks wrong, incomplete or inconsistent, and we may decline to compute a result that the records cannot support. You agree that a record left out of an analysis, or a result we decline to produce, is not a failure of the Service.

4.9 Copies of your records. When these terms give you a copy of your farm's records (sections 7.1 and 17), the copy contains the records we are permitted to share with you. It does not include data covered by our confidentiality or licence agreements with laboratories and other partners, such as some genotype data, or results you have not paid for. For those tests, you receive the results as we reported them to you.

5. What other users can see

5.1 Your farm. Your farm's name and site code are shown to other users, so that producers can find each other and see who bred and who owns an animal. They appear on your animals' records as breeder and owner, and your site code forms part of your animals' unique IDs. By default, other producers can also find your farm by its name, its site code or its members' names, and the result shows those names; you can turn this off in your farm's settings. Your email address is shown only if you choose to show it.

5.2 Animals. Any signed-in Allele user can open any animal's public view: its tag, name, unique ID, identity details, pedigree, progeny, EBVs and photos.

5.3 Owner-only records. Genotypes and DNA results, weights and other measurements, reproduction records, analyses, history and reports are owner-only. No other user can see them. If you transfer the animal, its new owner receives only the records you choose to share (section 6).

5.4 Private evaluation. You may choose to keep your farm's EBVs private. This hides your animals' EBVs from other users. It does not remove your animals from the evaluation: their records still inform every flock's results, as every other flock's records inform yours.

5.5 Parentage. Animal pages and other views in Allele show an animal's parents as recorded in its pedigree, whichever farm owns them. Formal parentage reports are different: a report names another farm's animal only if that animal's owner has agreed, and otherwise shows it as withheld. The same consent decides whether Allele names another farm's animal that it finds through DNA rather than through the pedigree, such as a suggested parent, a genomic relative or a matching sample. You can give this consent at any time. Once given, it cannot be withdrawn, because your animal's name may already be printed on someone else's report.

6. Animals that change hands

6.1 When you transfer an animal to another farm in Allele, only the owner-only records you choose to share move with it, and you can still see those records after the transfer. The animal's public view (section 5.2), breeder attribution and ownership history move with it in every case.

6.2 Records you do not share stay with you. You keep a perpetual, irrevocable right to use the records you entered and the results of tests you submitted. Records you keep back also stay in the evaluations (section 4), so keeping them back does not remove them from the animal's EBVs.

6.3 After the transfer, you cannot see the owner-only records the new owner adds, and the new owner sees only what you chose to share.

7. Leaving Allele

7.1 You may close your farm's account at any time. Before you do, you can ask us for a copy of your farm's records (section 4.9).

7.2 When you leave:

  • (a) we stop listing your farm for other producers to find, and stop showing your contact details. Your farm's name and site code may remain on the records of animals you bred or owned, and identifiers already issued, reports already issued and other farms' pedigrees stay as they are;
  • (b) we delete your personal information once we no longer need it, as our Privacy Policy describes;
  • (c) records that other users' records or results depend on stay, and stay in the evaluation population. These include pedigree and parentage links, transfers and ownership history, orders and invoices, genotypes and measurements used in analyses, and results already issued; and
  • (d) records that contribute nothing to other users' results or to the analyses may be deleted.

7.3 Why we do not delete everything. Allele's analyses pool every flock of a species. One large flock can carry a large share of the information behind other flocks' breeding values, breed classifications and growth models. Deleting its records would shift results that other farms have already relied on, weaken their future results, and break the pedigrees of animals they own. So we withdraw a departing farm from view rather than deleting what others depend on, and the licence in section 4 continues.

7.4 A request under privacy law to delete your personal information is handled under our Privacy Policy. We meet it by deleting or de-identifying your personal information, not by removing animal records that others depend on.

8. Samples and laboratory testing

8.1 You are responsible for collecting, labelling and sending each sample as we instruct, from the animal you name. Neither we nor the laboratory can verify that a sample came from the animal on its label.

8.2 Samples are tested by independent laboratories that we choose, acting on our instructions. The laboratory produces the raw genotypes; Allele interprets them.

8.3 Samples are typically destroyed upon testing. The laboratory may keep remaining tissue or DNA. We do not request long-term storage for extracted DNA; retesting of an animal typically requires a new sample.

8.4 If a sample fails the laboratory's or our quality checks, we will tell you. Whether we test a replacement sample, or credit or refund the test fee, is at our sole discretion.

8.5 Lost samples. If a sample is lost while in our custody, including in transit with the carrier after you have sent it as we instruct, we will give your farm an account credit of US$3 for the lost sample, plus an account credit for the price of the test ordered on it.

9. Farmhand

9.1 Farmhand turns what you type or say into answers and proposed changes. It can mishear or misread, especially numbers and tags. Check each change before you approve it; you are responsible for the changes you approve.

9.2 To answer you, what you type or say is processed by our speech-recognition and language-model providers (section 4.6).

9.3 We keep records of Farmhand conversations, including any audio we receive, to diagnose and fix problems, and delete them once that is done. Our Privacy Policy states how long we keep them. We may keep short excerpts as test cases, so that future versions handle the same requests correctly. We first remove your name, your farm's name, your contact details and anything else that identifies you.

9.4 Your Farmhand chat history, the conversations you can look back through, is kept for you until you delete it, one chat or all of them. Deleting it removes it from your history; it does not remove the records described in 9.3, which are kept separately. If you leave (section 7), your chat history is deleted.

10. Results, care and liability

10.1 Standard of care. We provide validated analyses with reasonable care and skill. An analysis is validated when we publish, with its results, a statement of what it measures, how accurate it has been shown to be, and when it is known to fail. Our promise applies within those stated limits. Every other analysis, result or feature is provided as is (section 10.6). Beyond that, to the fullest extent the law allows, we do not promise that any result, report, estimate or suggestion is free of error or omission.

10.2 What a result is. Parentage verdicts, breed classifications, EBVs and indexes, inbreeding figures, growth projections, marker interpretations and Farmhand's replies are estimates. Each is computed from the genotypes, records and pedigree available at the time. None of them is a diagnosis, veterinary advice, a guarantee of how an animal or its offspring will perform, a breed society's registration decision, or a certification by any government agency.

10.3 Results change. Estimates are revised as new records, genotypes and animals arrive. A later evaluation may move an EBV, a newly genotyped animal may change a parentage result, and a larger reference panel may change a breed estimate. A report states the results as at its date. We are not obliged to reissue earlier reports.

10.4 What we do not verify. We do not verify the identity, parentage, breed or history of any animal as you supply it, or the accuracy of records you enter or import.

10.5 Your remedy. If a paid result of a validated analysis is wrong because we failed to take reasonable care, we will, at our choice: run it again; test the sample, or a replacement you supply, again and reissue the report; or credit the fee you paid for that result (section 11.4). This is your only remedy for an incorrect result.

10.6 Everything else. Analyses without a published statement, including any we label experimental, preview or beta, and all free features, are provided as is. We give no warranty and make no statement that they are correct, even when they are part of a paid service. The remedy in section 10.5 does not apply to them.

10.7 Limits. To the fullest extent the law allows:

  • (a) we are not liable for lost sales, profits, premiums or breeding value; for decisions to cull, mate, buy, sell, show or register an animal; for loss of data; or for any indirect or consequential loss;
  • (b) our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the event that gave rise to the claim, and US$100; and
  • (c) these limits apply however the claim arises, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), equity, statute or otherwise.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited.

10.8 Reports you share. You may show your reports and results to buyers, breed societies and others. They are not parties to these terms and gain no rights under them. Anything you tell them about an animal is your own statement, not ours.

11. Fees and payment

11.1 Prices for tests, subscriptions and other paid services are shown before you are charged. Fees do not include taxes, which we add where they apply.

11.2 Where the law allows, a surcharge may apply to card payments. Tax is calculated on the total including the surcharge.

11.3 If a payment fails or an invoice goes unpaid, we may pause paid services until it is settled.

11.4 Credits and refunds. Where these terms give a remedy in money (sections 8.4, 8.5 and 10.5), we give it as account credit. Account credit belongs to your farm and is spent on future orders in Allele. Refunds to your payment method, of account credit or of any fee, are at our discretion, except where the law requires them.

12. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • (a) enter records you know are false, or misrepresent an animal's identity, parentage or ownership;
  • (b) deliberately skew genetic evaluations or other results, for example by leaving out, altering or selectively recording records so that animals look better or worse than their full records would show, by placing animals in management groups they do not belong to, or by submitting one animal's sample as another's;
  • (c) scrape, bulk-download or systematically extract data from the Service, including the public view, beyond what the Service's own features provide;
  • (d) use the Service or its data to build or feed a service that competes with Allele;
  • (e) copy, reverse engineer or attempt to obtain the Service's source code or methods;
  • (f) access another farm's account or owner-only records without permission, or try to get around any access control; or
  • (g) interfere with, overload or attack the Service.

13. Suspension and termination

13.1 We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, puts other users or the Service at risk, or has unpaid fees. Where practical, we tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem.

13.2 If we close an account for deliberately skewing results (section 12(b)), we may also leave that farm's affected records out of future analyses.

13.3 Section 7 applies to records when an account is closed, however it is closed.

14. Our property and feedback

14.1 We own the Service, including its software, methods, models, designs and branding, the results the Service computes, and the findings, tests and products of our research. We grant you a licence to use the results for your animals, including in sale catalogues, advertising and breed society applications.

14.2 If you send us suggestions or feedback, we may use them freely and without obligation to you.

15. Your responsibility for claims

You will defend us against, and pay any costs and damages resulting from, claims by other people that arise from:

  • (a) Your Data, including any claim that you had no right to submit it;
  • (b) samples you submitted or how they were labelled;
  • (c) anything you said about an animal to a buyer, breed society or anyone else, including about our reports; or
  • (d) your breach of these terms, or that of your farm's members.

16. Changes to these terms

16.1 We may update these terms. For a significant change, we will tell you by email or in the Service at least 30 days before it takes effect.

16.2 If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the change. If you do not accept it, you may leave under section 7.

16.3 We will not change these terms to let us give data you have already submitted to anyone else without your consent (sections 4.4 and 4.5).

17. If we stop providing Allele

If we decide to stop providing the Service, we will give you at least 90 days' notice and a copy of your farm's records (section 4.9). We may instead transfer the Service to a successor who agrees to be bound by these terms.

18. Disputes and governing law

18.1 These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, USA. The Federal Arbitration Act governs sections 18.3 to 18.6.

18.2 Talk to us first. Before starting any formal proceeding, contact us at support@allele.dev, describe the dispute and what you are asking for, and give us 30 days to try to resolve it. We will do the same before starting one against you.

18.3 Arbitration. Any dispute about the Service or these terms that is not resolved under section 18.2 will be decided by binding arbitration before a single arbitrator. The arbitration is administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules if you use the Service as an individual for personal purposes, and otherwise under its Commercial Arbitration Rules. Hearings are held by video or on written submissions, unless the arbitrator decides an in-person hearing is needed, in which case it is held in Wyoming. The arbitrator decides any question about whether a dispute must be arbitrated. Judgment on the award may be entered in any court with jurisdiction.

18.4 Individual claims only. You and we may each bring claims only individually, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class, collective or representative proceeding. You and we each give up the right to a jury trial.

18.5 Exceptions. Either party may bring an individual claim in small claims court. Either party may also ask a court for an injunction to stop a breach of section 12, or to protect its intellectual property, without first going to arbitration.

18.6 If arbitration cannot apply. If section 18.4 is found unenforceable for a dispute, sections 18.3 and 18.4 do not apply to that dispute. It will instead be decided by the state or federal courts located in Sheridan County, Wyoming, and both parties accept those courts' jurisdiction.

19. General

19.1 These terms, our Privacy Policy and the answers described in section 1.3 are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.

19.2 You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent. We may transfer ours to a successor to our business.

19.3 If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, it is limited only as far as necessary, and the rest stays in effect. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.

19.4 We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including outages of internet, utility, laboratory, courier or other services.

19.5 Nobody other than you and us has any rights under these terms.

19.6 Sections 4, 5.5, 6, 7, 10, 11 (for amounts owed), 14, 15, 18 and 19 continue to apply after you stop using the Service.

19.7 We may send you notices by email or in the Service.
